Sir William Robertson Academy is committed to delivering high quality Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG), which is personalised and impartial, to all of its students.

Throughout their time at SWRA, our students are encouraged to develop and build a deeper understanding of themselves in order that they are better equipped to make sound future choices. This is carried out through the CEIAG elements and the Good Career Guidance reaching the Gatsby Benchmarks.

We recognise how important it is for our students to receive effective and bespoke careers advice and guidance in order for them to make informed choices about their future. Students are supported with developing their skills, qualities and wider knowledge, and also to build upon their strengths. Lessons are designed to allow our students to look and move forwards.

All of our students are entitled to access Careers Guidance. This enables them to discuss their capabilities and ideas in order to be able to research further and then produce a plan that will allow them to maximise their own potential and achieve carefully planned goals. Our advice and guidance supports students throughout their progression to further and higher education, traineeships and apprenticeships.

We also offer extra-curricular opportunities that support career development including Duke of Edinburgh, NSC and School Council. We also encourage students to carry out voluntary and charity work that can enhance their career prospects, such as the swimarathon.

We are working hard to ensure our students are enterprising, self-confident and resilient as well as having an all-round education in order for them to achieve their career goals.

Sir William Robertson Academy welcomes the opportunity in giving FE, HE and training providers the opportunity to talk to students at the school.

    Framework

We continually monitor and evaluate our careers provision so that we can tailor our careers programme to the needs of employers and our students. We will review this policy in Spring 2024.

    Employer Information

We are very keen to engage with businesses and employers to help us inform and educate students about the local and national employment opportunities.

This links directly with Gatsby Benchmark 5 – Encounters with Employers and Employees, and Gatsby Benchmark 6 – Experiences of Workplaces. We provide many opportunities for businesses to interact with students: Careers Fairs, presentations, work experience, STEM days, small group work etc.

If you would like to get involved, or wish to advertise any apprenticeship vacancies through the college, then please contact the Careers Leader, Mrs Dowding on (01400) 272422 or email sarai.dowding@swracademy.org

    Kudos

Kudos is SWRA’s online career development service. It helps students explore their career options looking at subjects, courses and training.

If you are unsure what careers you may be interested in, Kudos can give you ideas based on what you like and dislike.

Packed with information on what employers are looking for, what you can earn and what qualifications you’ll need – it is a passport to your future.

If you are unsure of your user details please see the IT Technicians.

    Labour Market Information

The world of work is continually changing, particularly as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and you may wonder what future employment opportunities will look like; whether you’re a young person entering the world of work, changing your career path, running a business, getting back into work or advising someone. Looking at future trends, the area around you and the different ways in which we work can help many people with planning their future career.

    What is the “labour market”?

Labour market information can tell you:

    • The number of people in certain types of jobs.
    • Which industries are recruiting and where they are located.
    • What jobs and skills employers are looking for.
    • Growing or declining job areas and general employment trends.

When thinking about career ideas it is useful to consider what is happening in the labour market

and always to have ‘back up’ ideas.
